Role-play "Job application": Role card 1 (Man)

You have got 15 minutes time to read your personal profile sheet ( see below) and reflect upon what you are going to say during the role play. Also take into consideration what your partners might say and try to develop a strategy with which you can convince them to accept your proposals. You may take notes.

Don’t speak German! You may use your own first name in the role play. It’s essential to keep the following items of information strictly in mind during the role play:

  • You are a deputy manager in the personnel office of a big computer company.  You attend a committee meeting during which you have to select a candidate applying for a well-paid job as an expert computer programmer.
  • These are your four colleagues:
  • two other representatives of the management; one of them is your boss, the head of the personnel department and chairman of the meeting.
  • two representatives of the workforce, one of them is a trade union spokesman.
  • All in all, there are five applicants for the job:
     
    1. an attractive young woman (31) with good qualifications but little job experience
    2. a middle-aged woman (40), single parent of a 9-year-old daughter, well qualified and with a lot of job experience
    3. a young Puerto Rican (35), very well qualified, ambitious, with some job experience
    4. a young man (25) with a very good university exam but without any job  experience
    5. an elderly man (55) with lots of job experience and good references who  has been without a job for about a year after his former employer went bankrupt

Task: You are strictly in favour of candidate number 4! Try to convince the other members of the committee that this candidate should be chosen and that the other applicants are less qualified. The board has got 15 minutes to come to a decision. At the end of the meeting you definitely have to select one applicant!
